A Case for Boredom | Is ADHD just a symptom?

Humans have a propensity to oscillate between pain and boredom, so thought Arthur Schopenhauer. So, I guess it is what we do to avoid these that defines so much of us… it’s what we are attending to. Drama, distraction, and drugs is how most of us avoid pain and boredom. Many of us become defined by what we are subconsciously trying to escape. Some people get caught in drama and gossip, others escape through addictions, while others endlessly distract themselves with gadgets, being ‘busy’, and varieties of entertainment. This is to avoid boredom or dealing with uncomfortable feelings. That which we avoid becomes bigger. For many people, how they escape from boredom and pain makes up their entire sum – who they are.

Learning to make friends with boredom, stillness and calm is a most worthy pursuit. This is where we can become present and tap into the subconscious – greater intelligence. Learning how to be bored allows room and space for valuable esoteric pursuits from: expanding your consciousness, nudging your subconscious, centering body, breath and mind, relaxing and calming the nervous system, prayer and experiencing a connection with God – higher consciousness. It’s where much of our psycho-physio-socio-spiritual power comes from. Constant distraction and drama triggers little dopamine hits, but allows for little growth and prey to negative messaging. To expand consciousness a person needs to tap into inner calm and stillness and learn to operate on different level. Where the conscious and subconscious meet is great place, as is getting to nothing – just being conscious. Many people never attune themselves to a more intuitive level no think about expanding consciousness; they simply conform to societal norms and live a life that they are subjected to.

Boredom is surprisingly not boring. In the 2020’s distraction is immediate and right in the palm of our hand. Being constantly amused is practically a birth-right for post-moderns. It is stillness that is rare and requires discipline. Seeking constant distraction, entertainment, rumination is only keeping one from discovering themselves and higher consciousness.
